SYN-'s work is included in the Actions : what you can do with the city, presented by the Centre Canadien for Architecture at the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts from October 16, 2009 to March 13, 2009.

An exploration of how everyday human actions can animate and influence the perception and experience of contemporary cities. Seemingly common activities such as gardening, recycling, playing, and walking are pushed beyond their usual definition by the international architects, artists, and collectives featured in the exhibition. Their experimental interactions with the urban environment show the potential of a new level of participation by city residents.

On March 7th, 2008, SYN- led a group in an exploration of urban microclimates in Montreal, presented as part of the CCA public workshops in conjunction with the Actions : What You Can Do With the City exhibition.

Luc Lévesque and Jean-François Prost launched the urban exploration workshop SYN- in Montreal in 2000, joined by Jean-Maxime Dufresne in 2002.

The activities of SYN- have led to various urban interventions: Hypothèses d’amarrages (Les Commensaux / Skol, Montréal, 2001-2008>), Hypothèses d’insertions 1-2-3-4 (Houseboat-Occupations symbiotiques / Axenéo7, Hull-Gatineau, 2002 ; État d’Urgence / ATSA, Montréal, 2006 ; Interstices urbains temporaires / RDS, ISCRA Rhône, Atelier d’architecture autogérée, Paris, France, 2007; Espace Mobile, Centre de l'image contemporaine Vox, 2008); Prospectus ( Canadian Centre for Architecture, CCA-extra-muros, 2003-2004, and Biennale de Montréal, 'Agora, the public domain', 2004), completed with the collaboration of designer Louis-Charles Lasnier ; Conversations sur la ville (PEEP Show [Paysages Éphémères | Espaces Publics], 2008, and Jé-st Festival, Galerie Sans Nom, Moncton, New Brunswick, 2009).

SYN-'s work is included in the recent URBAN / ACT publication (2008), a presentation of a European wide network of practices who act within the urban field as a place for political change and architectural practice, introducing their different projects, tools and methods. The compilation of practices results from numerous pan European workshops, and has recently been published in book form by atelier d’architecture autogérée. The Urban / Act book not only locates and maps the activities of numerous practices, but is structured as a manual to allow insight into the methods of interventionist urban practice, like a user guide to “do-it-yourself urbanism”.

Bios

Luc Lévesque is an architect, professor in History and Theory of Contemporary Architecture Practice at Université Laval (Québec), his recent body of reseach traces the potentialities of an interstitial approach to urban landscape. As a member of the editorial committee of Inter actual art magazine (Quebec City), he has edited many issues dealing with architecture, landscape and urban practices. Between 1993 and 2000, he created with the collective Arqhé the series of on-site multimedia interventions Ligne de Site (I to V). In architecture, he has collaborated since 1991 with Atelier Zoom (Quebec City-Montréal) and has also worked for Peter Eisenman (New York) and Rem Koolhaas/OMA (Rotterdam).

Jean-Francois Prost is an artist who has studied in architecture; he has developed a hybrid practice, combining architecture, performance and installation work. His critical reflection explores our ties to space and to others. Since 1998, he has presented here, in Canada and abroad a number of urban interventions based on the themes of survival and belonging in generic and residual spaces: Convivialités électives (Lobe gallery, 2000) and Inflexions (3rd Montreal Biennale, 2002). Three new projects are currently in preparation for the cities of Laval, Buenos Aires and Detroit.

Jean-Maxime Dufresne is an artist trained in architecture who has completed a masters degree in interactive media at Université du Québec à Montréal. Themes of psychogeography and technological mediation continue to nourish his work, which touches on modes of experiencing urban and social territories and on the transformations that shape them. Recent works include Agency (Skol, 2009), Trackers (Optica, 2006), Rest Area (Interstices / Perte de Signal / UPH 10, 2004-05), as well as multipartite works Expériences pilotes (Action Art Actuel, 2007), Sondes (Caravansérail, 2006), Hot Spots (DARE-DARE / Dis-location, 2005) and Surfaces de reparation (AXENEO7, 2003), both completed in collaboration with artist Virginie Laganiere. In 2007, he joined Dare-Dare's board of directors and has also been involved in the organization of the Périphériques events.

Collaborators

Louis-Charles Lasnier was trained in architecture and graphic design, he worked for Bruce Mau Design (Toronto) and Claude Cormier architectes paysagistes (Montréal) before opening his own practice in 2001. Among his recent projects was the exhibition design of ''Out of the Box: Price Rossi Stirling + Matta-Clark', presented at the CCA in 2004.

At the intersection of many often-contradictory trains of thought, and disturbed by the accelerated pace of change in modern society, the urban environment is evolving along lines that are increasingly difficult to grasp. In this context, the status of spatiality – from neglected leftover space to tightly controlled “junkspace” – raises many questions. Confronted by such zones of ambiguity, and beyond the degrading or liberating connotations one may give them, we think it is important to capture their conceptual and experiential dimensions in order to inform a proactive practice. It is in this perspective that SYN- approaches urban exploration as an occasion for intervention and research.
